The Deinstitutionalizing

Series

The Deinstitutionalizing Series investigates the ways those of us working with folks with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities recreate the institution in the services and supports we provide. This series opens up the conversation on a harsh reality: that our community-based services are often still mirroring the care and support given in an institution.

The Deinstitutionalizing Series offers you bite-sized trainings about everyday aspects of adult life for the people you support. Let’s re-envision relationships, food, privacy, and much more, as we move towards helping people with disabilities live lives that are closer to yours and mine.

Each training in this series outlines a theme and reviews how that theme is commonly institutionalized in the lives of adults with disabilities. From there, we discuss ways we can continuously deinstitutionalize and humanize our services and supports. Lastly, we offer you resources that can aid you in your everyday work.
